Job Brief

We are looking for a bilingual Senior Project Manager to manage the organization of client projects and day-to-day translations on our proprietary Honyaku Cloud platform. You must also be able to conduct Japanese-to-English translations themselves and provide quality assurance for other translators' work at a fast-paced, startup poised to scale quickly in 2024. Applicants can work remotely or commute to our Tokyo Office in Kuramae.

What does the Senior Project Manager/Senior Translator do?

As our project manager, your job will be to coordinate people and processes to ensure that Honyaku Cloud projects are delivered on time and produce the desired results. You will be the go-to person for everything involving a project’s organization, feasibility, and timeline and an internal authority on translation quality assurance. You will also be responsible for maintaining high-quality translations before they are sent back to clients. You will also work closely with the CEO and CTO and propose ideas to increase project management efficiency.

Responsibilities
  • Coordinate internal resources and third parties/vendors for the flawless execution of projects
  • Ensure that all projects are delivered on time and within scope and budget
  • Developing project scopes and objectives, involving all relevant stakeholders and ensuring technical feasibility
  • Ensure resource availability and allocation
  • Use appropriate verification techniques to manage changes in project scope, schedule, and costs
  • Measure project performance using appropriate systems, tools, and techniques
  • Report and escalate issues to management as needed
  • Manage relationships with the client and all stakeholders
  • Perform risk management to minimize project risks
  • Establish and maintain relationships with third parties/vendors
  • Create and maintain comprehensive project documentation
  • Proofread translated texts for grammar, spelling, and punctuation accuracy
  • Translate between 10,000–15,000 JA-EN characters/month
  • Provide quality assurance on 20,000–25,000 JA-EN characters/month
Requirements

Project managers should have a background in business, budgeting, and analysis. Experience in professional translation, especially JA-EN/EN-JA, and knowledge of the translation/editing process is strongly preferred. Applicants should be comfortable working with technology and digital tools such as Google Workspace, Slack, Coda, and Notion.

Applicants should be an excellent communicator in English and Japanese and be comfortable managing multiple tasks. We ask that applicants be resourceful team players and have a problem-solving aptitude to find ways of completing projects that meet and exceed client expectations.

Specific responsibilities include researching industry-specific terminology, reading and thoroughly understanding the context of client material, and writing well in English. Some of the specific skills we look for are as follows:

  • Great educational background, preferably in the fields of computer science or engineering for technical project managers or in the humanities for translation-oriented project managers
  • Fluency in Japanese (JLPT N1 equivalent) and English (TOEIC 900+ equivalent) and excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Solid technical background, with understanding or hands-on experience in no/low-code web technologies
  • Strong working knowledge of Google Workspace, Slack, Notion, and Coda
  • Solid organizational skills, including attention to detail and multi-tasking skills
  • Proven work experience as a translator, interpreter, or similar role
  • Excellent proofreading skills with the ability to identify grammar, spelling, and punctuation errors
  • Strong working knowledge of content editing tools such as Grammarly
  • Familiarity with computer-assisted translation (CAT) tools
  • Time-management skills
